About Brass & Tarnish
Why does brass tarnish?
Brass is a natural alloy of copper and zinc. When exposed to air, moisture, and skin oils, it develops a patina — a natural darkening or colour shift. This is completely normal and, for many pieces, part of their handcrafted character.
Is tarnish a defect?
No. Tarnish is a natural characteristic of solid brass, not a manufacturing flaw. Pieces with a lacquered or coated finish will tarnish more slowly; uncoated (raw) brass will develop a patina sooner.
Will my piece look exactly like the photos over time?
Photos show pieces at the time of photography. With use and age, brass develops its own character. If you prefer the original brightness, regular cleaning will restore it (see below).
Cleaning Brass
How do I clean brass at home?
A gentle, effective home method:
- Use a mild dish soap with cold water.
- Apply with a soft cloth using light circular motions.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Dry immediately and completely with a soft, dry cloth — never leave brass wet.
Avoid: abrasive scrubbers, steel wool, bleach-based cleaners, or harsh chemical polishes, as these can scratch or permanently damage the surface.
Can I put brass pieces in the dishwasher?
No. Dishwashers use high heat, strong detergents, and prolonged moisture — all of which can strip finishes, accelerate tarnish, and warp or pit the metal. Always hand-wash brass pieces.
How often should I clean brass?
This depends on personal preference and use. For decorative pieces, a gentle wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth after handling is usually enough. For functional pieces used daily, a light clean every few weeks keeps them looking their best.
Food Safety
Is brass safe for food and drinks?
Uncoated (raw) brass can react with acidic foods and beverages (such as citrus juices, vinegar, or curd), which may affect both the metal and the taste of food. We recommend using brass vessels for dry foods, water, or decorative purposes unless the piece is specifically described as food-safe or lined.

Can I store water in brass containers?
Storing water overnight in unlined brass is a traditional practice. However, avoid storing acidic or carbonated drinks in brass. Always check your specific product's description for any care notes.
Are your brass pieces coated or lacquered?
Finish varies by product. Each product page will specify whether a piece is raw brass, lacquered, or has any food-safe lining. Please check the product description before use with food or beverages.
Storage
How should I store brass pieces?
- Keep in a dry environment — humidity accelerates tarnish.
- Wrap in a soft, dry cloth or acid-free tissue if storing for extended periods.
- Avoid storing in plastic bags, which can trap moisture.
- Keep away from direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
Can I display brass pieces outdoors?
Brass can be used outdoors but will tarnish significantly faster when exposed to rain, humidity, and direct sunlight. We recommend brass pieces for indoor use only.
